We Planted Trees!
When the organization Sázíme stromy reached out to us in March to ask if we would join a tree-planting event in the Blansko region, we did not hesitate. A small group of enthusiasts got together and, in the middle of the workweek, we headed to Kořenec on Wednesday, April 9, to plant lindens.
Twelve people set out from our company. And even though we were not a large crowd, our strength lay in teamwork. One of the volunteers even came from Brno, and despite his respectable age (85), he was still full of energy and enthusiasm at the end of the day!
The weather was on our side as well. It had snowed two days before the planting and rained the day before, but on the day of the event the sun was shining and warm, and the blue sky highlighted the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The next day it turned cold again. It felt as if the sun had come out just for us that day.
The four strongest among us took on hammering in a total of 162 stakes, while the rest formed planting teams. Everyone had their role—some backfilled the holes, others held the saplings, and others tied them to the stakes; together we put up wire fencing around each tree and built a watering basin from the soil. Even the little ones helped as much as they could and, as a reward, got to try riding on the local farmer’s tractor. It was a pleasant surprise that the event coordinators had refreshments ready throughout.
By around one o’clock in the afternoon, we had half the planting done. At first, it seemed almost impossible to get 54 lindens in the ground with so few participants in a single day, but as the number of planted trees grew, our pace quickened. By the end, the tempo was downright relentless—Semir would have been jealous. Thanks to seamless coordination within the teams, we finished exactly at three o’clock in the afternoon.
The event concluded with roasting sausages by the pond and relaxing after a job well done. Out in the fresh air, everything tasted better than in a restaurant, and we were warmed by the feeling that we had contributed to something with lasting value.
We would like to thank Sázíme stromy for the invitation, which we gladly accepted, and for the excellent organization. We are pleased we could help revive the local landscape and plant trees that will, we hope, endure long after us.
Speaking for Gatema, we can say one thing—it was hard work, but it was worth it.
